10-Inspiration on the waterways

Thinking back over my life I realise that a lot of my experiences are feeding my creative process. Living on a river boat for a few years was one of those times I will never forget. Travelling along the Belgian and French inland waterways was a total ‘out of my comfort zone’ buzz for me. I slept like a baby when we were moored in calm waters. I am not one for waves and bouncing around in the middle of the night. We called the boat Vision because it had such great views from all angles.

I was really excited the day we met other ‘boaties’ from New Zealand who offered me the use of their huge barge as a floating studio while they were away. I had a 360º view of the canal and all the activity around me was so stimulating.

The cockpit of ‘Whio’ was my studio for about 6 months

I realised then that a common thread was unfolding in front of my eyes. Dots started to join up but I wasn’t sure what was going to unfold. I was connected to water in a big way. Each month I will find ways to tell you how and why. In those days I had just stopped painting with watercolours and began experimenting with acrylics.

Learning the ropes!

Travelling in a flotilla was great fun.

In April I will tell you a little more about my life on the waterways. Going through locks left a huge impression on me.
